Raising Chickens Without Grains

Raising Chickens Without Grains

Raising chickens without grains is a wonderful video produced by my hero Geoff Lawton. Imagine taking a waste stream and using it to feed your chickens! In this video, Geoff visits Carl Hammer at Vermont Compost to learn how he feeds chickens at almost no cost.

Raising Chickens Without Grains:

I usually give my chickens organic feed but I would be open to using nonorganic foods to build the compost piles since the chickens are mostly eating the organisms in the pile anyways,  this method would be way better than factory farmed chickens/ eggs in my opinion. I think that it’s so cool how the compost piles even melt the snow so the chickens can continue to utilize them during the winter. This idea is especially cool because not only are you feeding your chickens at no cost but you also get compost at the end of the process.

I’m always trying to reduce my feed costs with creative solutions like fermenting their feed or setting up a maggot bucket. Here are a few other Ideas:

Soaking/ Sprouting your Grains to maximize their nutrients. Give them your Kitchen Scraps. Grow/ harvest Fodder (Feed that is specially grown or gathered for livestock). Road Kill (Only Fresh). Cover Crops (Grow a crop to cover the soil in your garden during winter and when you ready to plant in the spring let the chickens have at it!). Garden Trimmings (Throw them your extras from the garden or just let them have at it once the season is over)
Free Range (Let them go out and find their own food). Here are a few more Ideas from my buddy Justin Rhodes the Chicken Ninja Master!

I’d really like to know what you think about this idea and if you have tried it, please leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
