Soil Carbon Cowboys

Soil Carbon Cowboys

These Soil Carbon Cowboys were faced with crop failure and came out ahead of the game. They started practicing sustainable and regenerative methods of land management and are now building the carbon in their soil which is good for their business and the environment!

Allen Williams, Gabe Brown and Neil Dennis are heroes and innovators! These ranchers now know how to regenerate their soils while making their animals healthier and their operations more profitable. By working with nature they are saving thousands of dollars every year by not buying synthetic fertilizers. They have transitioned from a Bermuda grass monoculture to a polyculture pasture. By planting a mixture of seeds, some of which are legumes they are fixing nitrogen in their soil and feeding the heard at the same time. By mimicking the roaming herds of the bison the pastures are getting better over time with less work. They accomplish this by using the paddock shift method of grazing. Rather than leaving their heard in a huge area for weeks at a time they do the opposite. They bring a lot of animals in a small area for a short amount of time and then let the land rest. By doing this the plants get time to grow back and when they do they come back stronger and with more vigor.

Neil Dennis is saving time by using his quad to string a quarter of a mile of pasture in only 18 minutes!

By building the carbon in the soil they can hold more water in the soil helping them get through drought.

I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did!
